We often think that healthy choices mean giving things up—cutting out sugar, reducing coffee, avoiding this or that. But sometimes the most powerful change you can make is simply adding something nourishing in.
And if there’s one thing I recommend adding, it’s this: ceremonial grade raw cacao.
Not only is it rich, chocolatey and deeply satisfying to drink—it’s also packed with natural compounds that support your body and mind - including a significant amount of magnesium.
Why use oils, bath products and isolated supplements to get your magnesium? When just 2 tablespoons of Ceremonial Cacao can give you 100% of your magnesium RDI and its a delicious, bioavailable whole food?
What is Ceremonial Grade Cacao?
Ceremonial cacao is made from whole, organic cacao beans that are gently fermented, sun-dried, and ground—without roasting, alkalising, or the addition of sugar or additives. This minimal processing helps preserve its natural mineral content and plant compounds, making it distinctly different from regular cocoa powder.
This form of cacao is traditionally consumed in ceremonial or intentional settings, often as a hot drink prepared with water or plant milk, and is known for its grounding, calming effect.
Magnesium
That calm is a result of the naturally high magnesium content in cacao. Magnesium is an essential mineral that contributes to:
- Normal energy production
- Muscle and nerve function
- Healthy bone structure
- Reduction of tiredness and fatigue
Many people fall short of their recommended daily magnesium intake, particularly those with demanding lifestyles, high levels of stress, or increased physical activity. Including magnesium-rich whole foods like cacao in the diet can help support these daily needs.
Polyphenols
Raw cacao is rich in polyphenols (like flavonoids and catechins), which:
- Act as fuel for beneficial bacteria
- Help reduce inflammation in the gut
- Support microbial diversity
A Natural Mood Booster
Cacao contains a powerful compound called anandamide (aka the "bliss molecule")—plus phenylethylamine (PEA), which supports focus and feelings of joy. Together, they gently enhance mood without overstimulating the nervous system.
It also encourages the release of serotonin and dopamine, helping you feel uplifted and emotionally balanced.
Antioxidant-Rich Plant Compounds
Ceremonial cacao is a source of flavonoids—plant-based compounds with antioxidant properties. Antioxidants contribute to the protection of cells from oxidative stress and support overall health as part of a varied and balanced diet.
Consuming antioxidant-rich foods from a range of plant sources, including raw cacao, may assist in promoting overall cellular health and resilience.

A Milder Alternative to Caffeine
Cacao contains a natural compound called theobromine, which is similar to caffeine but gentler in its effects. While caffeine can sometimes cause jitteriness or disrupt sleep, theobromine is generally considered milder and longer-lasting in its action.
Many people find that ceremonial cacao offers a subtle, sustained sense of energy and mental clarity—making it a suitable addition to morning routines or periods of creative work, without the sharp peaks and crashes associated with stronger stimulants.
How to Use Ceremonial Cacao
There are many ways to incorporate ceremonial grade cacao into your routine:
Prepare as a warm drink by whisking into hot water or plant milk, blend it into smoothies or breakfast bowls, raw snacks, energy balls, or baking.
Ceremonial Hot Cacao
1 tablespoon ceremonial grade raw cacao powder
1 cup plant-based milk (almond, oat, coconut or cashew all work well)
1/2 cup hot water
1–2 teaspoons pure maple syrup, raw honey, or coconut nectar (to taste)
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon (optional, for blood sugar balance and warmth)
Small pinch of sea salt (enhances flavour + adds trace minerals)
In a small saucepan, heat the water and milk together until warm but not boiling.
Add cacao powder, sweetener, cinnamon and sea salt
Whisk vigorously until smooth and creamy. You can also blend it for extra froth.
Pour into your favourite mug, take a deep breath, and sip slowly and mindfully.
