WHAT THE SCIENCE SAYS....
Study: Is it an effective and safe treatment for anxiety?
Fuladi S, Emami SA, Mohammadpour AH, Karimani A, Manteghi AA, Sahebkar A. Assessment of the Efficacy of Withania somnifera Root Extract in Patients with Generalized Anxiety Disorder: A Randomized Double-blind Placebo- Controlled Trial. Curr Rev Clin Exp Pharmacol. 2021;16(2):191-196. doi: 10.2174/1574884715666200413120413. PMID: 32282308.
This article discusses the need for effective and long-term treatments for anxiety disorders, which are prevalent in the general population. The study aims to evaluate the potential of Withania somnifera (W. somnifera) root extract as an alternative therapy to standard treatments for Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD).
The study involved 40 patients with confirmed GAD diagnoses who were randomly divided into two groups: a treatment group receiving W. somnifera extract (1g/day) and a placebo group. All patients were already on treatment with Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) and took either the extract or a placebo daily for six weeks.
The Hamilton anxiety rating scale was used to assess the severity of GAD symptoms at the beginning of the trial and at the second and sixth weeks. The results showed a significant improvement in the treatment group, with a 14-unit reduction in Hamilton anxiety rating scores compared to an 8-unit reduction in the placebo group. Additionally, significant differences were observed in the treatment group at the second and sixth weeks in reducing Generalized Anxiety Disorder symptoms. Importantly, no adverse effects were observed with the use of the extract.
In conclusion, the study suggests that W. somnifera extract may be a safe and effective adjunct to SSRIs in treating GAD, with well-tolerated effects. This herbal remedy shows promise as a potential treatment option for GAD with fewer side effects, offering hope for individuals seeking alternatives to conventional treatments

Study: Does it help with sleep quality and onset
Langade D, Kanchi S, Salve J, Debnath K, Ambegaokar D. Efficacy and Safety of Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) Root Extract in Insomnia and Anxiety: A Double-blind, Randomized, Placebo-controlled Study. Cureus. 2019 Sep 28;11(9):e5797. doi: 10.7759/cureus.5797. PMID: 31728244; PMCID: PMC6827862.
A meta-analysis found that taking specific ashwagandha root extracts at various doses for 6-12 weeks can modestly improve overall sleep, including sleep quality, latency, duration, wake time after sleep onset, and efficiency, especially in individuals with insomnia, higher doses (at least 600 mg daily), and longer treatment durations (at least 8 weeks), although there is some heterogeneity in the included studies; additionally, a specific ashwagandha extract at 125 mg daily for 6 weeks led to a 72% improvement in sleep quality in patients with non-restorative sleep, along with small to moderate improvements in total sleep time, sleep latency, and awakenings when compared to a placebo.
