Circadian Rhythm and Your Body

The Circadian rhythm is a natural cycle of changes that happen in the human body within a 24 hr cycle. These cycles are predominantly controlled by light and darkness and can affect hormones, body temperature, appetite, sleep.

Disruptions to our circadian clock can result in hormonal issues, sleep disorders like insomnia, learning deficits and weight gain. More serious consequences can contribute to cancers, reproductive issues, immune dysfunction, mood disorders and premature death. So yeah it’s kind of a big deal.

What affects our circadian rhythm?

  • It can be a gene mutation or change
  • Shift work or jet lag
  • Electronic devices like phones, computers and TV’s at night can affect our biological clock

Ways to improve your circadian rhythm.

  1. Create a bedtime routine and stick to it. Set your bedtime at a realistic hour.
  2. Move your body every day. Some form of exercise is integral.
  3. Avoid having naps during the day.
  4. Limit your screen time, especially in the evening.
  5. Avoid all stimulants in the evening including caffeine and alcohol
